I've heard about a heartworm injection. Is it safe? Does it work?
Yes, there IS a heartworm preventative injection, called ProHeart. It is for dogs only and it last for 6 months. ProHeart has been proven very effective at preventing heartworm disease and hookworm infestation. ProHeart is very safe, approved for using in pregnant female dogs and breeding male dogs. The cost of ProHeart is comparable to that of the monthly oral heartworm preventative Interceptor. Many of our clients who have erratic schedules, such as airline pilots and flight attendants, have found ProHeart to be a big help in making sure their dogs are protected from heartworm disease. If you are interested in ProHeart as an option for your dog, please schedule a visit with one of the staff doctors at Windmill Animal Hospital to discuss it.
